Real estate prices in the Norwegian town of Kirkenes and the Russian city of Murmansk are surging proportionally with the temperature rise in the Arctic. Oil shipping is booming, illegal fishing is continuing and the Arctic might in few decades be left with only a little ice. While 10 percent of the polar ice has already melted because of global warming, the optimism in the North is almost extreme, journalist Ole Matismoen writes in the Aftenposten newspaper.

Today, the German Science Council has recommended going ahead with construction of the new research vessel Aurora Borealis. The research icebreaker,designed as a European cooperative project, will not only be equipped with state-of-the-art technology, but will also have a drilling platform. The ship is designed primarily for operation in the Arctic and will be the first of its kind capable of working in the Central Arctic

The Yamal nuclear-powered icebreaker departed from Murmansk in the small morning hours of May 20 to evacuate personnel of the North Pole 34 floating research station, a source at the Arctic and Antarctica Research Institute told Itar-Tass on Friday.

The conference focuses on remote sensing applications in the polar environments, and will provide a forum for exchanging research and encouraging cooperation in the circumpolar regions of the world. It will also serve as an excellent method to report progress on International Polar Year activities.
